Bien Hoa (7AF) - Air Force F-100 Supersabre pilots from the 510th Tactical Fighter Squadron scrambled from the Bien Hoa Air Base alert pad recently and destroyed a fortification and bunker complex nine miles northwest of Ben Loi.

Captain Walter T. West, 25, St. Petersburg, Fla., and Major Donald J. Campbell, 32, Phoenix, Ariz., were the strike pilots.

"The forward air controller (FAC) was putting another F-100 strike in when we arrived so we had to orbit until they finished up," Campbell related. "He reported that they were taking ground fire from enemy soldiers in a tree line."

"When we started our bombing attack, the FAC said there were some enemy troops in the open and along the tree line,"he continued. "We dropped our first bombs in pairs and then put the others in singly."

"We were having trouble seeing the FAC's smoke markers because of heavy haze, but he said we were on target," Campbell reported. "We had to strafe the tree line with our cannons to complete the strike."

The FAC reported they destroyed seven fortifications and four bunkers.
